Authors and Artists: Jana Laiz, Saturday, February 24th at 3:30

Jana Laiz, the Writer in Residence at Arrowhead, the Berkshire home where Herman Melville lived and wrote Moby Dick, will discuss her book A Free Woman on God’s Earth at the Chatham Public Library on February 24 at 3:30 pm. The book tells the touching story of Elizabeth Freeman, a hard-working and spirited slave. Also known as Mumbet; Freeman was the first African American slave to win her freedom in a Supreme Judicial court in Massachusetts in 1781.

In addition to being a prolific author of many books,  Laiz is a teacher who has taught students from kindergarten to universities. She also provides writing workshops for children and adults.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Chatham Public Library, Laiz’s talk is a continuation of the group’s Authors and Artists series. It is free of charge and open to the public.  A question and answer session and a reception will follow the talk.
